A word about the elephants.  The elephant at the reserve are Indian elephants a subtype of Asian elephant.  The elephant is the national animal of Thailand and is a protected species. The elephant population dwindled from 100,000 in the early part of the 20th century to less than 4,000 animals today. There are several sanctuaries now in Thailand to preserve and protect the elephants and land set aside to maintain a natural habitat.
